DIY :: GLOWING SKIN

STAY GLOWING AND GORGEOUS THIS SUMMER WITH THESE SIMPLE AT-HOME RECIPES... As a Holistic Nutrition and Wellness Consultant, my passion is studying nourishing foods and how they impact the mind and body in a supportive, healing way.  I love for all my food to be organic, locally grown, and seasonal, and I am always searching for ways to keep my skincare products equally as natural and organic as possible.  So when, a few years ago I set out to give my bathroom a green and organic overhaul, I began experimenting with some home recipes that I am finding work really well, if not better than the chemical laden products of my past.  As we know, our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything that we put on it directly into our bloodstreams.  Summer is almost upon us and this season is such a wonderful time to use the abundance of beautiful, fresh produce available to not only nourish and support ourselves from the inside out, but to really nourish and create glowing skin from the outside in.

The following recipes are a few ways that I incorporate my favorite summer fruits into my beauty routines:

SUMMER EVENING CLEANSER

PINEAPPLE CLEANSER

Pineapple contains Bromelain, an enzyme that helps to remove dead cells and cleanse the pores, which makes it an excellent exfoliate.  It is also considered anti-inflammatory, which can help to calm inflamed or irritated skin.  When eaten, pineapple can help to improve digestion, assist with circulation, and reduces mucus.  It is also high in Vitamin C, which assists in the collagen formation, crucial to glowing skin.

Ingredients:

- 5 Large Pineapple Chunks

- 2 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Preparation:

-  Mix all the ingredients together in a blender until smooth.

- Apply to the face in the evening and leave on for 10-15 minutes.

- Rinse well and pat dry.

CUCUMBER + GREEN TEA + ROSEWATER TONER

Cucumbers are rich in vitamin C and caffeic acid, which when applied topically help to brighten and soothe the skin, as well as reduce swelling.  They are also very hydrating when consumed, packed with electrolytes, B vitamins, and other nutrients, all which help to create a glow of nourishment from within.

Ingredients:

- Juice of 1 Cucumber

- ½ C Green or White Tea

- ½ C Organic Rosewater

Preparation:

After steeping the teas, I let them cool.  I then combine them with the cucumber juice and rosewater in a small mister bottle.  This creates a perfect anti-inflammatory toner, which calms the skin, while providing it with a boost of antioxidants.  You can also use this throughout the day to refresh your skin.  Each batch usually lasts 7-10 days.

SUMMER MASKS

MANUKA HONEY + LEMON MASK

This is the perfect summer mask.  Not only is the aromatherapy of lemon intensely refreshing and uplifting, but lemon juice has powerful anti-bacterial properties.  Its acidity also makes it wonderful brightener and brown spot combatant. Throughout the day I use lemon in just about everything: my morning warm water, my water bottle, in salad dressings, sautéing vegetables, and even squeezed over quinoa.  Internally it helps to re-alkalize and balance the crucial PH levels of the body that can become too acidic after a night’s sleep, from eating too much meat, dairy, sugar, and processed foods, from intense exercise, and from the stress of our daily lives.

Manuka Honey is another absolute favorite beauty tool of mine.  It is produced in New Zealand and is lauded for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.  It also provides amazing hydration to the skin.  So the combination of lemon and honey together is priceless.  I use this mask at least once a week.  See below for a terrific body scrub also using lemon and Manuka honey.

Ingredients:

- 2 T Manuka Honey

- 1 T Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

Preparation:

- Mix together thoroughly, and smooth onto face.

- Leave on for 15-20 minutes.

- Rinse and gently pat dry.  Spray with Cucumber Green Tea Toner.  Apply moisturizer or face oil of choice.

PAPAYA MASK

Papayas contain the enzyme Pepsin, which acts as a strong exfoliating agent, helping to soothe the digestive tract and improving overall digestive function.  Great digestion is one of the keys to glowing skin!  Papayas are also high in vitamins A and C, which assist in repairing and oxygenating the skin.  When applied topically, papaya helps to dissolve dead skin cells.  In this mask the egg white helps to tone the skin and the honey acts as a powerful hydrator.

Ingredients:

- 1/2 Ripe Papaya, skinned and seeded

- 1 Beaten Egg White

- 1 T of Manuka Honey

Preparation:

- Mix all the ingredients together in a blender until smooth.

- Apply the mask and leave on for 20 minutes.

- Rinse and pat dry.  Spray with Cucumber Green Tea Toner.  Apply moisturizer or face oil of choice.

BLUEBERRY MASK

Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants in the fruit and vegetable world. They have the highest ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) ratings of any food.  Antioxidants are compounds that help keep your cells healthy and fight off aging free radicals.  It’s these antioxidants that benefit your body when you eat them that also benefit your skin when applied topically, revitalizing the skin and initiating healing.

Ingredients:

- ½ C Fresh Blueberries

- 1 T Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

- 2 T Unsweetened Plain Yogurt

Preparation:

- Mix all the ingredients together in a blender until smooth.

- Apply to clean face, and leave on skin for 15-20 minutes.

- Rinse and pat dry.  Spray with Cucumber Green Tea Toner.  Apply moisturizer or face oil of choice.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

LEMON JUICE FOR BROWN SPOTS

I bring half a lemon up to my bathroom to keep in a glass container for a few days.  Nightly I apply the lemon juice with a Q-tip to any pesky brown/sun spots.  It can sting a bit, but is a wonderful chemical free way to lighten them up.

BROWN SUGAR + LEMON SCRUB

Ingredients:

- 1C Coffee

- 1C Organic Brown Sugar

- ½ C Fresh Lemon Juice

- ½ C Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

- 4T Manuka Honey

Preparation:

- Simply combine all ingredients in a glass container that has a good lid.

- I’ll sometimes add some Epsom Salts and aromatherapy oil/s of my choice.

- Keep this bowl in the shower and use this to exfoliate your entire body once a week, starting with your feet and working your way up.  It ends up being a really effective lymph massage as well.  **Note: this scrub is a bit too harsh for your face.
