We have had the pleasure of having Fern Olivia, Thyroid Guru, and founder of Ajai Alchemy and Thyroid.Yoga™ , with us all week. Earlier she shared her sensual, sexy, + full body reawakening Shakti Goddess morning tonic, along with her deeply inspiring personal journey to recovery from Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism, Adrenal Fatigue, and PCOS. If you relate to her story in any way, I highly, highly encourage you to head on over to Mind Body Green to check out her just-released Thyroid.Yoga™ class.
She is back with us today to share her favorite healing + self care rituals.
Louise Hay published in her book Heal Your Body, a listing of disease conditions of the body along with the emotional causes that she felt would lead to eventual physical dysfunction. Her work identifies key areas of emotional buildup that may be manifesting in the body.
"MENSTRUAL IMBALANCE :: Rejection of one's femininity, not wanting to be a woman. Guilt or feeling "dirty". Dislike of the self.
AFFIRMATION :: My bodily processes are a natural part of life. I love and approve of myself."
For women suffering amenorrhea, I recommend a blend of self-care, energy work and mindfulness practices, including daily affirmation. I believe we all have the power to tap into our own inner healer. The mind and body are not separate. I’ve developed a self-care ritual + practice for healing my own amenorrhea, and have seen tremendous results in my clients following this suggested practice as well.
The first pillar of my self-care routine is a daily yoga practice. Yoga is a powerful way to nourish yourself so you can wake up feeling bright-eyed, beautiful, energized, confident, sexy in your skin, and connected with your creativity, femininity and purpose. Yoga was instrumental in my own healing and it will be in yours too. As a complement to eating healthy, supplementation, and self-care, yoga works by strengthening and supporting your immune and glandular systems, and promotes digestive health - all which need to be working in synergy in order to feel good and have healthy menstrual cycles.
Energetically, you are allowing the currency to flow through your body, clearing the garbage and releasing it out. When you breathe deeply, you’ll clear your lungs, focus your mind, and your body relaxes and lets go of stress. Chronic stress manifests as stagnation in your kidneys, which triggers adrenal fatigue, taxes your immunity and digestion, and ultimately wrecks havoc on your thyroid. By relieving your body and mind from the chronic state of “fight or flight” - a consistent yoga practice will provide a huge benefit to your well-being.
I recommend rising 10-15 minutes earlier than your usual waking time to start your day with this simple sequence. My unique Thyroid.Yoga™ sequences target your kidneys and thyroid to flush and nourish your glandular system - a total game-changer! When you join Fern Olivia's Thyroid Yoga Inner Circle, you'll receive her signature sequence to guide you in your daily morning practice for radiant energy and metabolism! When I lost my period, I was on a strict vegan diet and I wasn’t getting enough protein to adequately nourish my body. In most cases with amenorrhea, women are underweight and have lack of adequate body fat to manufacture hormones. Women who are overweight can have amenorrhea as a result of excess androgens associated with excess body fat. It is essential to get adequate protein in your diet. Practitioners recommend that women consume at least 40 grams of protein daily. Depending on your body type (height, weight) you will have individual caloric needs. A minimum of 1500 calories daily is a good guideline for anyone. Of those calories, about 20% should be good quality fats such as nuts, seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, and fish oil. It is so important to consume enough fats to produce sex hormones (including estrogen and progesterone). Gluten-free grains including brown rice, wild rice, millet, oatmeal, amaranth, quinoa, barley, and buckwheat provide fiber, B vitamins and support proper detoxification of hormones. I recommend eating only when hungry, at consistent times each day, and filling your plate with colorful phyto-nutrients and clean protein to ensure you’re getting the nutrients you need to support hormone balance and weight. ps: There’s NOTHING sexier than a woman with curves, so embrace what your mamma gave you!
The third pillar of my daily self-care ritual incorporates daily meditation, breathwork and affirmation.
Ancient wisdom teaches “a healthy mind is a healthy body." Your body truly is a mirror reflection of what’s going on inside that beautiful head of yours. When I was struggling with weight gain and feelings of low self-esteem around my lack of period, I was telling my body I was unworthy of love and affection, and so naturally, I wasn’t receiving any.
I believe that every person has the power to realize consciousness, the ability to take responsibility, and a desire to find self-love and self-healing. Meditation can help with this.
From this space of self-love, you will naturally gravitate towards healing foods, exercise and daily movement, and a lifestyle that will help you feel alive, healthy, vibrant, and wonderful. You will gravitate towards the means to keep your body alive, prevent sickness, and experience a profound mind-body connection. In these moments, you will radically begin to understand how your current environment and relationships are affecting each and every system in your body. You will begin to let go of situations that are not serving you, so you can heal. And from this place of self-love and self-worth, you will begin to build confidence in your own power to attract, manifest and sustain beauty, health, and love in your life.
There is nothing more important than truly believing – with all your soul - that the healthy treatments you choose will work. And furthermore, feeling worthy of beauty, love, sustained health and prosperity in your life. Your belief sets the intention, and from that intention the healing process occurs, and then a disease-free state can manifest in your body.
My daily morning practice includes setting my timer for 5 minutes to sit, visualizing myself in perfect health and happiness and giving myself permission to draw it into my life.
This daily meditation helped me to send love and healing light to my body rather than negativity and disdain for being “broken.” I created it to remind myself, and my clients, that we are all worthy, beautiful and sexy. I welcome you to listen and download it here.
"In order to heal, we have to communicate fearlessly for what we desire to feel in our bodies and in our lives. We’ve got to speak up with conscious confidence. We’ve got to live mindfully and with integrity. When we do that, everything flows. Sharing our stories and supporting each other in our journeys will heal us as a collective."
