I wanted to re.share Adriana Ayales, Herbalist + Founder of Anima Mundi Herbals, wisdom with us all to clear up any confusion about the difference between an Elixir + a Tonic.
Elixirs and Tonics are often spoken of in the same way but, in fact are quite different. Both are indeed medicinal wellness providers yet, their distinguishing characteristics are what exactly is being used when formulated.
ELIXIRS :: are healing botanicals known to address specific imbalances yet, they are not necessarily teaching the body to mimic the healing chemistry in order for the body to continue healing. Also, elixirs are made with delicious flavoring agents, flowers and healthy sweeteners, as well as use a different ratio of medicinal potency. Elixirs are usually a 1:3 or 1:4 in liquid : herb extraction.
TONICS :: on the other hand, promote good health all around, having a more adaptogenic approach to the entire system. Meaning, targeting several body systems while teaching the body to continue the particular chemistry the formula contains. They fortify the system with healing blocks that actually remain within. Ideally, the body continues producing the chemical reaction without the assistance of the herbs.
The commonality is that they both are medicinal extractions in liquid form. Traditionally, they both are efficient liquid vehicles that deliver the potent nutrition directly into the bloodstream. Both forms are potent vehicles of medicinal source that remind us of our true origin. Tonics and Elixirs contain high-vibrational potency capturing some of Nature's most remarkable miracles. They are symbols to remind us that we do indeed have the power to heal ourselves.
