Our highly effective DIY tick repellant recipe that both Yula + I have been using for over a year now for regular outdoor adventures :: NO ticks have been found.
Ideal for Spring's up + down temperatures, this DIY toner calms, hydrates, and de.flames my outer layer.
I've been driving a ton. I live in Topanga, which means getting around is a bit of a shlep. Beyond worth it, but still miles + miles in the car. Which also means my hands are in this steamy, hot Summer sun constantly. I'm wearing my sunscreen, but they are taking a beating. Esthetician, Healer, Herbalist, Founder of JustBe Skin Care Line, and my dear, friend Negin shares with us the most nourishing + rejuvenating vegan hand treatment. Hands are truly the first part of the body to show age. And they are very likely the most over worked and under cared for. So we thought it was time to show our hands some true love. These transforming ingredients are straight from your own kitchen, but the results far surpass any store bought treatment. Give your hands some love today.
- This treatment will exfoliate the dead skin from hands
- It is also brightening | Lemon, Turmeric, Baking Soda
- Extremely moisturizing | Avocado
- Anti-inflammatory | Turmeric
- 1 avocado
- 1 T aluminum-free baking soda
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 lemon (juice + pulp)
- 2 compostable plastic bags
Mix the avocado and the juice and pulp of one lemon together either by hand or blender then add the turmeric and baking soda. Leave on as long as you can. The longer the more beneficial. Perhaps while watching a movie. At least 15 minutes.
I wanted to revisit this post as these are both recipes that I continue to use weekly, along with being a beautiful fusion of some of my passions: a good DIY, celebrating superfood ingredients, and all-natural, completely organic skincare. I adore DIY skin care. Especially when it’s completely 100% edible and crafted with ingredients that I am also using daily in my smoothies, tonics, and elixirs. Revitalization and healing at its most powerful from the inside out and from the outside in.
Summer is in full swing with the sun enveloping us in her warmth, which is a welcoming time for many, but one that can also leave our skin overheated and craving refreshment. While I’m much more careful these days about my sun soaks than in my younger years, I still love to indulge. There is something just so therapeutic about pure sunshine. And careful soaking is crucial for keeping my Vitamin D levels optimal for continued healing on my Lyme journey. So while I usually allow myself 15 minutes of sunscreen-less sun time both before 10am and after 3pm, the time in between is most certainly slathered and protected with my favorite natural brands.
I also am sure to have these two refreshing + rejuvenating DIY treatments on hand. The first is my antioxidant-rich, super hydrating toner - I make one to keep in my fridge for an extra cooling mist, and one to keep in my purse or beach basket. The second treatment is my end-of-the-day skin savior mask that is packed with amazing superfoods, and is hydrating, anti-inflammatory, and wonderfully calming for overheated skin.
SUMMER TONER - WHITE TEA + ALOE VERA
3 White Tea bags
Aloe Vera Juice (I prefer the George’s brand for its non-sour taste)
After steeping the tea, I let it cool. I then combine equal parts tea and Aloe Vera Juice in a small mister bottle. White Tea is the least processed of the teas and is actually much higher in antioxidants than green tea. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to reduce redness and even out skin tone. Aloe Vera is a supremely hydrating, calming, + healing. If kept in the fridge, this toner can be exceptionally refreshing after a long day. You can also mist throughout the day to revive your skin. Each batch usually lasts 7-10 days.
POST-SUN HYDRATING + HEALING MASK
Mix ingredients together. Mist with a little bit of White Tea + Aloe Toner for desired consistency. Apply evenly onto face, neck, and decollate and let sit for 20 minutes. The honey is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and is an amazing hydrator. **Cleanser Tip: I love to swap out my regular cleanser and use just honey to cleanse a few nights a week. It’s also a great exfoliator!** Colostrum’s antibiotic and anti-viral properties, when applied topically, are hugely healing, especially for sunburned or irritated skin. It is also an anti-inflammatory, helping to calm and tone. Chlorella, the single cell green algae, packed with chlorophyll, is a nutrient dense powerhouse. It is full of antioxidants, Vitamins A, C, E, and essential fatty acids that infuse the skin with nutrients and help to reduce inflammation. It has also been proven to speed up cell + tissue regeneration, as well as improve skin’s elasticity. These 3 beautiful ingredients mixed together make for a stunning mask that leave your skin soft, hydrated, even-toned, plump, and brightened.
So with GENTLE as my new theme and as I continue on my full time gentle approach, along with surrounding myself with gentle souls who support + inspire my journey, my outer layer deserves the same gentle treatment. I adore the skincare brands that I feature on M.PARKE STUDIO and will continue to use my thoughtfully selected + special products created by Shiva Rose, Gemstone Organic, Living Libations, Dr. Alkaitis, True Botanicals, JustBe Skin Line, Vered Organic Botanicals, Poppy and Someday, Jiva Apoha, and Floracopeia, for as long as these gentle, beautiful people continue to create for us all. But I do love feeding my skin directly from my kitchen as well when in between products or as a supportive treatment. As we know our skin is our largest organ and absorbs every single thing that we put on it directly into our bloodstreams…so in order to nourish and support this amazing organ, I feed it the most divine + gentle ingredients.
Here are a few of my favorites at the moment:
CLEANSER :: Raw Goat Milk Yogurt + Honey
I combine 1 tspn of each together and massage in circles around the face + neck. The lactic acid in the yogurt is a gentle exfoliator and both are super hydrating leaving skin cleansed and ready for next steps in your ritual.
TONER :: White or Green Tea + Organic Rosewater
After steeping the teas, I let them cool. I then combine them with the rosewater in a small mister bottle. They create a perfect anti-inflammatory toner, which calms the skin, while providing it with a boost of antioxidants. You can also use this throughout the day to refresh your skin. Each batch usually lasts 7-10 days.
TAME INFLAMMATION :: Aloe Vera
I use this in my masks or as a spot treatment for irritated + dry areas. Aloe contains over 12 substances with cooling and moisturizing properties that can help tame inflammation. Can soothe inflamed skin and enhance collagen and hyaluronic acid to help rejuvenate skin.
MASK :: Manuka Honey
I slather a nice thick layer of this powerful antibacterial honey on my face, neck, chest,and even my arms and hands once or twice a week and leave it on for about 20 minutes. You will look lit from within after and it leaves your skin super soft + hydrated.
DIMINISH BROWN SPOTS :: Lemon Juice
I bring half a lemon up to my bathroom to keep in a glass container for a few days. Nightly I apply the lemon juice with a Q-tip to any pesky brown/sun spots. It can sting a bit, but is a wonderful chemical free way to lighten them up.
BODY EXFOLIATING SCRUB :: Organic Ground Coffee, Organic Brown Sugar, Virgin Coconut Oil, Honey
I combine 1 cup of each in a bowl that I keep in the shower. I’ll sometimes add some Sea Salts and aromatherapy oil/s of my choice, which presently is Rose Geranium. Use this to exfoliate your entire body once or twice a week, starting with your feet and working your way up. It ends up being a really effective lymph massage as well.
**Note: this scrub is a bit too harsh for your face.
MOISTURIZER :: Virgin Coconut Oil
I apply this while my skin is still wet from the bath or shower, and then reapply in places that need extra moisture like elbows and legs.
